About Saving Sunny

Picture
Saving Sunny, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in Louisville, Kentucky, rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes animal victims of abuse, neglect and those that are in danger of euthanasia. Most of our dogs are described as “Bully Breeds”, including a variety of American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, American Bulldogs, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, and other misunderstood breeds or breed mixes. Our primary mission is to provide safe haven in foster homes that will help our dogs become healthy, socialized and balanced in order to be able to adopt them into positive and loving homes. When needed, we provide medical, physical, and behavior rehabilitation and offer our dogs as much support as they need in order to become eligible for adoption. In addition, we are committed to producing positive ambassadors for misunderstood breeds and promoting public education about responsible dog ownership, spay/neuter, and reporting animal abuse, neglect and dog fighting.

Sunny's Story

Picture
Saving Sunny, Inc. is named in honor of Sunny the pit bull who was thrown from the Clark Memorial Bridge in July 2009 and miraculously survived the 80ft. drop into the Ohio River. Patrons and staff at Joe’s Crab Shack on the riverfront witnessed the unimaginable act and raced to the waterside to call to the dazed and struggling dog who was soon pulled from the water by a Louisville Metro Fire & Rescue team who happened to be training on the river that day.  Kelsey Westbrook, a server at Joe’s Crab Shack, adopted Sunny on the spot and gave her a name that reflected her happy and trusting disposition as she greeted the crowd who waited for her on dry land.

Sunny’s story is an inspirational example of a dog’s strength and  resilience and the power of human kindness to an animal.  She was able to survive terrible cruelty and thrive with the love of her
adoptive mother, Kelsey, and with the help, kindness and compassion of the broader community.

Sunny’s story is also an example of how a dedicated partnership between our community and the LMPD can result in the arrest of those who would commit such terrible acts against innocent animals.  The man who threw Sunny off the bridge was arrested and charged with animal cruelty several days after committing the crime, thanks to the commitment of LMPD officers, animal control officers and the support of   Louisville citizens.

Unfortunately, Sunny’s abuser received no sentence due to lack of evidence and weak animal cruelty laws.  Her story, however, has sparked a community-wide rally for the humane treatment of animals, no matter their history or breed, and has led to the rescue of many silent victims who would have otherwise been destroyed.

Hershey is a handsome ten-month-old chocolate Labrador mix. With his lustrous milk-chocolatey coat and dapper good looks, he will surely turn heads walking with you down the sidewalk. Hershey loves to play with his dog friends in his foster home and even likes hanging out with the cats from time to time. He is up to date on shots, neutered and micro-chipped. Can Hershey become your buddy for life?
